CVS Health is hiring a Software Development Engineer in Test for a senior individual-contributor position centered on testing, testability and quality engineering. The engineer builds scalable test frameworks, developer tooling and reusable automation, and pairs hands-on engineering with technical leadership across teams.

The person in this seat will shape architecture, sharpen automation strategy, shorten developer feedback loops and help set consistent quality practices that hold up across products and platforms. The emphasis is on engineering solutions that lift product quality, platform reliability and delivery speed.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve scalable test frameworks, automation libraries and quality tools that developers use directly.
• Understand how the wider software ecosystem fits together and shape quality approaches that support platform strategy.
• Work with Product, Architecture and Engineering to set test strategy, coverage goals and acceptance criteria.
• Create reusable utilities, harnesses, mocks, stubs and data solutions that make systems easier to test and validate.
• Develop dedicated test strategies and harnesses for conversational AI systems across Voice and Chat channels.
• Cover quality for APIs, backend services and full-stack workflows, including distributed, multi-service environments.
• Validate complex multi-turn conversations, intent recognition, orchestration logic and agent interactions.
• Wire automated quality checks into CI/CD pipelines so teams get quick, dependable feedback.
• Set and promote best practices for choosing frameworks, managing test data, designing automation and running engineering-led quality.
• Produce patterns, examples and documentation that make testing approachable and cut friction for engineers.
• Spot quality gaps, recommend scalable fixes and drive improvements that raise release confidence and customer experience.
• Influence architecture and design decisions with attention to quality risk, test strategy and long-term maintainability.
• Investigate difficult defects, analyze failure trends and support root-cause resolution across development and test environments.
• Coach and mentor engineers to strengthen developer-led testing and overall quality engineering maturity.
• Pair with developers on tough quality and testability problems and contribute code directly when needed.

Required Qualifications

• At least 7 years across software development, test engineering or quality engineering, including substantial SDET or developer-led test infrastructure work.
• Strong programming skills in at least one language, such as TypeScript or Java.
• Deep experience building test frameworks, automation infrastructure, harnesses or developer tooling in modern engineering environments.
• Solid grasp of software design, object-oriented design, distributed systems, debugging, APIs and maintainable code.
• Experience assuring quality across backend services, APIs and full-stack systems.
• Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD workflows and improving engineering feedback loops.
• Experience designing and maintaining test data strategies and reusable testing patterns.
• Experience defining technical standards or reusable solutions that serve multiple teams.
• Demonstrated ability to steer technical direction as a senior individual contributor.
• Strong communication skills, including documenting patterns, mentoring engineers and explaining quality strategy clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with conversational AI platforms, AI agents or multi-turn workflow validation.
• Experience testing Voice and Chat experiences with channel-specific methods.
• Experience with API testing, mocking and contract testing.
• Experience with developer tooling, service virtualization or environment-aware testing.
• Experience raising automation maturity or quality engineering standards across an organization.
• Experience with performance, resiliency or reliability testing.
• Experience evaluating AI or LLM-based responses using emerging validation approaches.
• Experience in highly regulated or large-scale enterprise environments.

Education

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, defined as a high school diploma plus four years of relevant work experience.

Pay and Benefits

The typical base pay range for this role is $130,295 to $284,280. CVS Health notes that the range covers all positions in the job grade and may be stated as an hourly rate or annual full-time salary. The actual offer depends on factors such as experience, education and geography.

The role is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program on top of base pay, and it carries an award target in the company’s equity award program.
