Recognizing that successful federal IT initiatives require a deep understanding of the people using the tools, NuAxis combines technologists, engineers, and artists to foster an environment where teamwork thrives. The organization is passionate about supporting its employees, believing that a happy team is the foundation for delivering amazing, impactful work.

About the Role

NuAxis is looking for a QA / Test Engineer to comprehensively plan, execute, and document testing processes for an enterprise-level government project. Operating under the direction of the Senior Lead Tester, you will validate an Appian low-code case management system, a public-facing Drupal portal, and a Kafka-based interagency data hub. Your rigorous testing will ensure that every monthly release exceeds security, accessibility, and performance expectations while heavily emphasizing readiness for peak seasonal usage.

What You’ll Do

You will oversee quality across the entire software development lifecycle, ensuring critical government systems are highly accessible and fully operational.

  • Analyze user stories during Agile backlog refinement sessions to detect testability gaps before committing to a sprint.
  • Develop, manage, and execute test cases, scenarios, and data for new functionality and technical debt resolution.
  • Coordinate and execute System Integration, Smoke, Functional, and Regression testing across Drupal, Appian, and Data Hub architectures.
  • Perform extensive Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility testing to ensure 100% compliance using standard government tools.
  • Execute performance and load testing prior to peak usage seasons, validating latency, response time, and SLA metrics.
  • Validate external and interagency event-streaming integrations, assessing data integrity and API functionality.
  • Log, track, and categorize defects within JIRA, maintaining absolute traceability from initial roadmap to bug resolution.
  • Schedule, prepare, and support federal stakeholders through User Acceptance Testing (UAT) kickoff sessions and execution.
  • Build out automated regression test suites to systematically reduce manual cycle times over the life of the project.
  • Perform critical post-deployment smoke testing and provide hypercare support immediately following production releases.

What You’ll Need

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (additional experience may be substituted).
  • 3 to 5 years of proven software testing and QA experience, specifically on complex government or enterprise IT platforms.
  • Hands-on expertise driving functional, regression, smoke, integration, and UAT testing within Agile/Scrum environments.
  • Experience testing modern web applications and low-code platforms (with a strong preference for Appian experience).
  • Working knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 accessibility testing techniques utilizing tools like screen readers, axe, or ANDI.
  • Proficiency using JIRA and test management plugins (e.g., Zephyr or Xray).
  • Basic SQL knowledge to accurately perform data validation within relational databases, specifically Oracle.
  • The ability to obtain and actively maintain a Federal Public Trust suitability determination.

Nice to Have

  • DHS Trusted Tester Section 508 certification (or the ability to obtain it within the first 90 days).
  • Additional QA certifications such as ISTQB Foundation Level or Appian Certified Associate Developer.
  • Familiarity with automated testing frameworks such as Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, or FitNesse for Appian.
  • Previous experience utilizing performance/load tools like LoadRunner, k6, or JMeter.
  • Experience validating event-driven Kafka architectures or performing API tests via Postman/REST Assured.
  • Domain expertise supporting public-facing systems within immigration, labor, or benefits adjudication.
