Cash Line is one of Upstart’s flagship lending products, giving borrowers a way to access flexible credit through a fully digital experience. The team handles major parts of the borrower journey — offer generation, pricing, underwriting, funding, and account management — while working closely with Upstart’s broader lending platform. As a Software Engineer on Cash Line, you’ll design, build, and run the backend systems behind these experiences, working mostly with backend services, APIs, and the data flows that power pricing, underwriting, funding, and account management.

Upstart is an AI lending marketplace partnering with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit. The company is digital-first, with most Upstarters able to work from anywhere in the US alongside teammates spread across 80+ cities, while still gathering in person periodically for team onsites.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain reliable backend services and APIs supporting Cash Line and the wider borrower journey.
  • Build systems that power offer generation, pricing, underwriting, funding, and account management experiences.
  • Work across the stack as needed to connect backend capabilities with borrower-facing apps and partner systems.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to scope, build, and ship features that reduce friction in the borrower experience.
  • Own meaningful features end to end, working across disciplines while building deeper expertise on a business-critical product.

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong backend service and API development skills in a language such as Python, Java, Kotlin, C#, or Ruby.
  • Experience building scalable, reliable systems for consumer-facing products with complex user journeys.
  • Familiarity with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and modern engineering practices.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to fintech, lending, payments, or other regulated industries.

Work Environment

As a digital-first company, most of the work can be done remotely, though most Upstarters live and work in the US and gather periodically for in-person team onsites — typically once or twice a quarter for a few consecutive days, with occasional travel required for these gatherings.
